Meaning of Obedience

Obedience means doing what you are told to do. It is to comply with the rules and regulations at home and at school, and with the laws in the community. It is to adhere to instructions given to us or to act upon any order or command given to us.

Abraham obeys God’s call (Genesis 12:1-9)

Abraham’s father was Terah. He was the descendants of one of those people who were scattered in small language groups after the Tower of Babel incident. He grew up in Ur of Chaldeans.

When Terah died in Haran, Abraham a young man took over the responsibilities of his family. Abraham lived with his family till he was seventy-years. Then God called him. God told Abraham:

“Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.’’

Blessing from obeying God’s call

God promised to bless Abraham if he obeyed the call to leave his country. God promised Abraham four things:

  1. A new land.
  2. A great nation.
  3. Bless those who bless Abraham.
  4. A blessing to all mankind or generation.

From Haran, Abraham and his group travelled southwards for weeks and months. Finally they entered the land of Canaan and came to the city Shechem. In the centre of the town was a sacred tree called the ‘Oak of Moreh.’ Abraham and his group stopped by the sacred tree and spent the night there. In the night God appeared to Abraham in Shechem and promised him the land – Canaan to give him and his descendants.

ABRAHAM DEMONSTRATES HIS OBEDIENCE

In the land of Canaan, Abraham continued to trust God. When Abraham was ninety years old, God appeared to him and made a covenant (agreement) with him, which also extends to his descendants. Then God asked him to do two things to demonstrate his obedience to him: First, Abraham and his descendants were to circumcise all their male children on the eight day. The second was to sacrifice his only son Isaac.

THE BIRTH OF ISAAC AND THE CIRCUMCISION OF MALE CHILDREN (Gen. 21:1-9)

In the agreement, God promised Abraham that his wife who was barren would give birth to a baby boy. They believed the promise and soon afterwards his wife conceived and bore him a son, he named him Isaac. Exactly eight days after Isaac was born, Abraham demonstrated his obedience to God by circumcising him.

THE SACRIFICE OF ISAAC (Genesis 22:1-19)

When Isaac was about twelve years of age, God asked Abraham to go and offer the child as a sacrifice to Him in the land of Moriah. God wanted to test Abraham’s obedience and confidence because He knew Abraham loved Isaac very much.

Abraham obeyed God’s command without question. When he took out his knife to slay Isaac for the sacrifice, an angel of the Lord stopped him. Abraham took the ram that was provided for him in a thicket and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son. Abraham therefore called the name of the place: `The Lord will provide-Jehovah Jireh’.

God was so happy with the obedient trust of Abraham that He decided to reward him for his faithfulness.

MORAL INSTRUCTION

  1. Abraham left his country to an unknown destination as directed by God. We should never question God when he directs.
