THE DEFINITE ARTICLE.

In English, there is only one form of the definite article. ‘The’ in French there are three forms, depending on the gender and number of the noun following article:

• With a masculine singular noun ( Le )
• With a feminine singular noun   (La )
•   With a plural noun (masculine or feminine)   –    (Les)

Masculine                   Feminin                       Pluriel

Le chauffeur                la secretaire                 the student                                                       

The driver                   the secretary   les etudient

Le salon                       la cuisine                     les chambres

The lounge                  the kitchen                  the rooms

Note :   le and la both change to  ‘L’ before a vowel or a silent ‘h’.

Before vowel: l’avion l’odeur

                          The plane the odour

Before silent t, l’homme l’hotesse

Pronunciation: The S of les is pronounced Z when the noun following it begins with a vowel or a silent h. 

Forms with the prepositions à (to, at)

When the definite article is used à, the following spelling changes take place.

Masculine                   Feminin

Singulier         à + le = au                    à + la = à la

Pluriel à + les = aux                à + les = aux

à l’ devant les noms au singulier qui commencent per une voyelle ou le “h”

1.         Examples:

• à + le = au
• je vais au marché  
• il va au cinema
• Nous allons au restaurant
• Vous allez au stade
• Elle travaille au supermarché

2.         Examples:

• à + la = à la
• je vais à la libraire 
• Tu travailles a la biblio the que
• Ils vont a la maison a moto
• Nous allons a la poste
• Elle travaille à la boucherie

3.         Examples:

• à + la becomes a l’ when the next word begins with a vowel  or a silent h: 
• Je vais à l’ecole
• Il va à l’eglise
• Nous allons à l’hotel
• Vous allez à l’hopital

4.         Examples:

• à + les  = aux

(masulin/feminine pluriel)

• Nous allons aux Etats – unis d Ame rique par avion  
• Repondez aux questions shivantes
• Ma tante parle aux enfants
• Le professeur par aux etidiants
• Le medecin rend visite aux hopitaux

NOTE:

Forms with the prepositions de (of, from) when the definite article is used with de the following spelling changes takes place.

Masculine                   Feminin

Singulier         de + le = du                  de la / de l’

Pluriel de + les = des  des
