If ∝and β are the roots of the equation ax2 + bx + c = 0.
Then we have x2– (∝+ β) x + ∝β=0 OR x2– (sum of roots)x + (Product of roots) = 0
Examples: Find the quadratic equations whose roots are;
2, 3 (b) -3, 2 (c) 1/2, 3/2 (d) 1, 1/3 (e) 3, -3
Solution
∝+ β = 2 + 3 = 5 (b) ∝+ β = -3 + 2 = -1
