Volumetric analysis, also known as titration, is a technique in analytical chemistry used to determine the quantity or concentration of a substance in a solution. It involves the controlled addition of a solution of known concentration (the titrant) to a solution of unknown concentration (the analyte) until a reaction between the two is complete.
The most common type of volumetric analysis is acid-base titration, which involves the addition of an acid or a base to a solution until the equivalence point is reached, where the number of moles of the acid or base equals the number of moles of the analyte.
Other types of volumetric analysis include precipitation titration, where a precipitating agent is added to the analyte solution until the equivalence point is reached, and redox titration, where an oxidizing or reducing agent is added to the analyte solution until the equivalence point is reached.
Volumetric analysis is widely used in industries such as pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and environmental analysis to determine the purity or concentration of substances in solutions.
