Batteries are indispensable in off grid inverter installations because the battery bank provides the source of electrical power that is inverted into AC and transferred to your load or house.
There are many types of batteries as evident in the many electrical appliances you can think of from your watches to wall clock to automobile and then inverter power system. In this course, we shall focus on deep cycle batteries and you will find out why as you read on.
As you already know, batteries stores energy to be used later on. Deep cycle batteries are specially designed to continuously provide electricity over a long period of time and it can be discharged as deeply as 80% without permanently damaging the battery plates. So this is why it is called deep cycle.
Compare Deep cycle batteries with starting batteries which are automotive batteries (for vehicles, machines). Starting batteries are designed to deliver a large burst of power for only a short time as needed for your vehicle/machine engine starting. Discharging starting batteries deeply as in deep cycle batteries will permanently damage the cells.
Starter batteries are also called Cranking batteries
