Now that we have learned about the working principles behind solar panel operation, as an installer, you must be able to identify the various types of solar panels out there in the market.
There are several types of Solar panels. Good enough, they all have different characteristics. I mean you can differentiate them by their physical appearance. There are 3 popular types of panels. I will show you the types and take a close look at the solar cells in the pictures, you will notice the physical differences in their appearance.
In this Wavetra Energy Academy video, watch and learn other ways you can identify the different types of solar panels:
So before we round up, we have put up an easy to understand table that lets you understand and differentiate the various types of solar panels.
Solar Cell Type | Efficiency-Rate | Advantages | Disadvantages |
Mono-crystalline Solar Panels | ~20% | High efficiency rate; lasts longer; saves space due to higher efficiency i.e more power output per meter square. | Expensive. |
Poly-crystalline Solar Panels (p-Si) | ~15% | Cheaper. | Takes up more space. Less efficient. |
Thin-Film: Amorphous Silicon Solar Panels | ~7-10% | Relatively low costs; Flexible. | shorter warranties & lifespan |
